Bush’s pretty Queen Anne-style mansion was built with St. Louis brick, zinc-plated sheet metal and Idaho sandstone. It’s survived pretty much intact, due to good construction, good luck and good people taking care of it. Today it houses a teacher’s apartment and various office spaces, including a spa/massage therapist.

Instagram post 2086811109691619980_3654738354 Quirks and multiple details abound - including a secret passageway - in this one-of-a-kind heritage home, The dentil trim, six-over-six upper windows, and panelled wooden door with elaborate sidelights and Palladian windows are just the start. The house walls are “3 bricks thick” so water, gas and electrical are all visible inside and the basement is a labyrinth of pipes and wires. The main and second floor layouts are identical🤔. Most of the house’s details are original and imaginative (e.g. light fixtures). Doors and archways inside are all different sizes and designs, as though the architect was randomly trying things out, and some doors have fanciful windows: a star, flowers, and so on. There are remnants of bygone times, like servants’ quarters and a special kitchen door so that the grocery delivery boy could put away your order. The gardens are still beautifully kept, and the occupants, descendants of the original family, have made quite an effort to honour the home’s legacy. And yes, if you lean on an upstairs wall just right, a hidden passageway opens up.

Peter Sonna House, 121 Main Street (1902) - Federal style, which was considered patriotic at the time as it builds on the British Georgian style and leans toward Greek and Roman influences.

On his journey, he decided instead to stay in Boise and open his clothing store; he eventually became Idaho’s 11th governor. He led efforts to build Idaho’s first synagogue in 1895, the Ahavath Beth Israel (still in use), and was the country’s first practicing Jewish governor. The house is now used as office space, house museum, and a place for the current governor to entertain. I just 💕how much personality this house has, with its bay windows, turrets, scalloped siding, balconies, gingerbread and fancy windows.😍 304 West State Street - Moses Alexander house (1897). Its simple exterior belies a sumptuous interior, with elaborate mahogany woodwork throughout and an African rose marble fireplace in the library. ”This home, designed in 1891 by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, is an important work in the development of modern residential architecture, and possesses national significance in commemorating the history of the United States of America.” (plaque)

Lower left, you can see four of the eight bronze busts on tall pedestals: the Mart’s Hall of Fame (to locals, The Pez Dispensers), essentially Big Department Store Guys. There are fifty-six, 7’ tall terra cotta statues of Native American chiefs all around the tower’s crown, intended to be viewed from the upper floors of nearby skyscrapers. Built by retail giant Marshall Field, the Mart centralized and consolidated Chicago’s architectural and interior design wholesale goods business.

The women did not take vows and were free to come and go. There were many advantages: community, protection, support. It’s 100 storeys/1,128’ plus the 372’ antenna masts. Wikipedia: “From the 95th floor restaurant, diners can look out at Chicago and Lake Michigan. The observatory (360 Chicago)... has a 360° view of the city, up to four states, and a distance of over 80 miles (130 km). 360 Chicago is home to TILT, a moving platform that leans visitors over the edge of the skyscraper to a 30-degree angle... [and] Chicago's only open-air SkyWalk... The 44th-floor sky lobby features America's highest indoor swimming pool.” (The “up to four states” refers to the weather which regularly vacillates among seasons each day, and as for if I have experienced the 360 observatory with tilt etc., that’s a HELL NO.) It was built as and still commonly referred to as the John Hancock Center; last year someother company bought it and the naming rights.

The closest airport is Wicks John O’Groats, and the nightly rate (with flatscreen TV, wifi, and breakfast) is $168CDN. It’s on the water, right across the North Sea from Norway. I wonder what the connection is to this house, which Nova Scotia-born Dr. James Collins Farish had built in 1912 as an investment rental. Dr. Farish was an ear-nose-throat specialist who retired in 1941 after practicing 50 years. It’s just two homes on a lot, after all, instead of one – all still in one building.” Let’s work together, people.

The interior: “Murals of romantic Mediterranean scenery, lanterns, plaster screens, wrought iron trellis work covered with climbing roses and twinkling stars in a midnight sky gave the patrons the illusion of being seated in an exotic walled garden.” (Canada’s Historic Places) The theatre was re-named in 2000 after Raymond Burr, esteemed actor and philanthropist who was born and buried in New Westminster. Burr, with a commanding (300-350 lb.) presence and basso voice, often played villains (e.g. Rear Window) and had a busy career in movies, radio and Broadway before long-term TV hit series Perry Mason and Ironside. In 2011, after massive renovations, the theatre re-opened as the Columbia once again, housing a comedy club, the Raymond Burr Centre for Performing Arts, and a banquet/concert hall.

I think the red and black trim and dentil accents on this 1890 building are snappy. Yelp reviewers rave about the Lettered Streets Coffee House, noteworthy because Yelp reviewers are usually so ruddy grumpy. I wonder: maybe if they had a latte from Lettered Streets they wouldn’t be so irritable.

Instagram post 1975121926256203975_3654738354 “Cameron’s Books and Magazines was founded in 1938 by Robert Cameron in downtown Portland, Oregon. His first love was stamp collecting but realized there was more money in the printed word. During WW2 Bob also worked nights at the Kaiser Shipyards... In 1976 an outdoor writer and book scout named Fred Goetz was lamenting to Bob that a deal he had been making to buy a used bookstore on SE 39th Ave had fallen through. Bob promptly asked him if he wanted to buy Cameron’s. Fred accepted and took over the next year. He took flak from some of the long time customers for raising the prices on magazines and paperbacks – they had been priced 10 cents or 3 for a quarter!… In 1982 Fred hired an unshaven reprobate who claimed to have bookstore experience, even though this actually only amounted to filling in a couple of days at The King of Rome Book Shop in Sellwood. That guy was me and I worked for Fred for seven years.  He taught me the business and sold it to me in 1989. No one could have asked for a better boss and mentor.  Sadly he was killed in a car accident in Feb. 2005.
So since 1989 I have tried to follow the store tradition of selling good used books and magazines at fair prices.  We also sell a different selection of titles through ABE and Biblio.

With fewer places for groups to meet in our ever-denser city, more people will become isolated, diminishing our quality of life. Public places are essential to a healthy community and are a cornerstone of democracy, and our churches represent a very significant amount of the social gathering space available in our city.”* In the 150-seat sanctuary, there are usually ~30 here on Sunday mornings. There are countless imaginative ways to repurpose heritage churches with declining congregations, maintaining architecture and community connections; look at St. James Community, Ryerson United and First Baptist in Vancouver, and Seattle’s Sanctuary [see Doorstory360 post May 3rd]. Far preferable and more beneficial than yet another overpriced condo development. 💚the stylish surprise of stained glass at the apex. (*Heritage Vancouver)

David Lloyd George School is on Heritage Vancouver’s 2018 Top 10 Endangered Watch List because, despite being listed on the Vancouver Heritage Register, it is not protected against demolition. In providing a safe school environment, the school board appears to markedly favour delaying-maintenance-then-tearing-down-and-erecting-new over upgrading-historic, despite other school districts’ success with seismic upgrading of older buildings. VSB bulldozed Sir Sandford Fleming School (1912) in 2016 and there is much concern that this historic landmark will be next.

Housing development is planned here. #ofcourse As Heritage Vancouver notes, the Lands are an “extemely complex site with many layers of history that encompass a wide range of values - cultural, social, historical, architectural, natural and economic. These layers span the physical and the intangible, and some of them are deeply conflicting.” Fairmont Academy (Heritage A, originally a boys’ private school, then a military hospital, then an RCMP facility) is here and the First Nations partnership has asked the building be removed “as an act of reconciliation”, with a First Nations cultural centre replacing it. Instagram post 1801141616648659349_3654738354 In the early boomtown days, the city was full of low-cost housing and innovative ways to house poor and transient labourers. Genya Yada and Rinnosuke Takehara built this charming and interesting tenement building 1912-13 to house Japanese workers (and families) who laboured at the various mills in False Creek. It’s only 18’ wide but covers most of the length of the steep 120’ lot, with two storeys visible on the uphill front streetside, four storeys high at lane side - seven suites Tetrised in - the “Long House”. It stands alone now in this neighbourhood as a reminder of the Japanese-Canadian contribution to the growth of the lumber industry in the Pacific Northwest. Like most Japanese-Canadian property, it was confiscated during the Second World War. It is for sale now, with shiny new strata buildings all around, so it is on Heritage Vancouver’s 2018 Top 10 Endangered Watch List.

Instagram post 1797523866919593182_3654738354 A bewildering explanation of cantatas: “The Italian solo cantata tended, when on a large scale, to become indistinguishable from a scene in an opera, in the same way the church cantata, solo or choral, is indistinguishable from a small oratorio or portion... This is equally evident whether one examines the church cantatas of Bach, of which nearly 200 are extant… or the Chandos Anthems of Handel. In Johann Sebastian Bach's case many of the larger cantatas are actually called oratorios; and the Christmas Oratorio is a collection of six church cantatas actually intended for performance on six different days, though together forming as complete an artistic whole as any classical oratorio.” 🤔The musically beautiful Hodson Manor was built for Capt. James Logan (Vancouver Ice & Cold Storage Co.), then purchased by businessman / alderman William Hodson. It remained with the Hodsons until 1940 and then became a rooming house. In 1974, the mansion was moved here from its original site two blocks away and renovated into a community centre. It is owned by the City; tenants include the Vancouver Cantata Singers, Vancouver Chamber Choir, and Early Music Vancouver. (Wikipedia and Heritage Vancouver)

A hand-operated crane made from local spruce trees hoisted the crates containing the huge prisms of the one-ton lens up the 200’ cliff to this lighthouse. To turn the lens, the lighthouse keeper had to wind a 200-lb. weight on chariot wheels by hand every two hours. The tower is petite (38’) compared to other lighthouses but its perch high on a solid rock ledge gave it a 21-mile visibility reach. The lighthouse was decommissioned in 1963; per public demand, it was not demolished but it was unstaffed, which left it susceptible to vandalism. The Cape Meares light was extinguished in 2014. It’s in a breathtaking state park, with ‘Big Spruce’ (an 800-year-old Sitka) and a Tillamook Indian ceremonial ‘Octopus tree’. The Three Arch Rocks Wildlife Refuge (est. 1907), just offshore, is brimming with sea lions, puffins, and lots of other seabirds.

Glover Road used to be called Smuggler's Trail. It ran from Fort Langley to what was then known as Langley Prairie, now the City of Langley. This office building, in the heart of historic Fort Langley, looks historic but I can’t find any history on it, rhyming or otherwise. I believe it’s a fairly recent build, very pretty and made to fit in to the neighbourhood, which I think is darn decent of them.

Instagram post 1788568816385902465_3654738354 Half of the financing for the Hotel Utah was through Mormon (LDS) stockholders (including the bishop), but in order to pay off the $2m construction tab, it had to have “the largest and finest bar in the West”. The project was groundbreaking in that Mormons and non-Mormons were working together. Another contrast was that until the 1960s, there were black employees, but not black guests; Harry Belafonte and Ella Fitzgerald, among others, were denied rooms; later, Marian Anderson, a stellar black singer, was allowed to stay if she took meals in her room and did not use the elevator. Other guests over the years: Elton John, Denmark's Queen Margrethe II, Jimmy Stewart, Katherine Hepburn, Henry Fonda, Helen Hayes, Ed Asner, Raymond Burr, and Liberace, along with every President from Taft to Reagan. In 1987, LDS shareholders were then the majority and converted the hotel to a multi-use LDS social centre, named after Mormon founder Joseph Smith. In the chapel, there is a prestigious Casavant Frères pipe organ (from Ste-Hyacinthe, Quebec), and I’m not sure if we’re having our leg pulled, but in Wiki research it refers to the organ as “characterized by a French accent”. 🤔

Instagram post 1788093151148707954_3654738354 Imagine living here - it’s owned by the City, leased as a private home. “Deerholme was built as the retirement estate of Lieutenant Colonel Thomas Owen Townley (1862-1935) and his wife, Frances M. Townley... Built in 1913, this is one of the most significant of the Deer Lake estate houses and was the last of grand Edwardian era mansions built on the lots surrounding the lake. The area had been opened up for development two years earlier by the construction of the British Columbia Electric Railway Interurban Line... Grand in scale, architecturally sophisticated and set in a bucolic landscape, this residence demonstrates the social status of the owner in the privileged classes of the rapidly developing social structure of Burnaby. The house is also significant as one of the earliest designs by the son of Thomas and Frances Townley, architect Fred Laughton Townley (1887-1966), who had graduated in architecture in 1911 from the University of Pennsylvania... F.L. Townley was a founding partner in Townley and Matheson, which achieved significant success as one of the most accomplished local architectural firms, culminating in their best known commission, Vancouver City Hall, 1935-36.”

Instagram post 1786787361192225137_3654738354 The area was lush with orchards and strawberry fields when Dr. William and Ruth Baldwin asked their close friend, architect Arthur Erickson to design this house, just as Erickson and Geoff Massey won the competition to design Simon Fraser University. Erickson’s design aesthetic of ‘site, light and cadence’ blends glass, wood and right angles here with Japanese features, like the reflecting pool. The house hugs the steep shoreline, blending into the site, highlighting the peaceful water view. The Baldwin home has significant heritage value and is handsomely finished with midcentury décor. Happily, it is a preserved City of Burnaby / Land Conservancy heritage site.
