The Jewelers’ Building originally had parking on the first 23 floors with a car lift (swipe to see) so ”Jewelers carrying thousands of dollars worth of diamonds and justifiably concerned about robbery could drive their cars into the building from Lower Wacker, where elevators would spirit them—still in their cars—up to their offices”*.😲 The spectacular dome on the top of the building (3rd photo) used to be The Stratosphere Lounge (frequented by Al Capone… possibly the owner?🤔) and is now the jaw-dropping showroom of award-winning architect Helmut Jahn. At 40 storeys, it was considered the tallest building in the world (praeter NYC). Swipe again to see the swoonworthy lobby.😍 This beauty faces the Chicago River.

“Herbert Bell of the Bell & Zoller Coal Company commissioned this 23-storey skyscraper in 1924. When completed, it was one of the first generation skyscrapers that sprang up on North Michigan Avenue as a result of Burnham and Bennett’s 1909 ‘Plan of Chicago’. The building’s tripartite* composition and Corinthian columns exemplify the Classical Revival style of architecture, rendered in terra cotta manufactured in Chicago by the Northwestern Terra Cotta Company. In 1956, the building was renamed when it was purchased by the Old Republic Life Insurance Company.“ (building’s Historic Landmark plaque)

This vibrant mosaic-covered apartment was built in 1937, and it’s a looker. In 1937, construction began on the snazzy Lions Gate Bridge. The Vancouver Sun newspaper offices were destroyed by fire in March 1937, but the day’s paper still came out on time (!). And, also in 1937, Helena Gutteridge (CCF, precursor to the NDP) kicked down some doors to became the first woman ever elected to Vancouver City Council. What a year! (Remember to vote!)
BTW: Mosaics originated in the Bronze Age of Ancient Greece. The tiny squares are called tesserae.

Ingenious union of the old and new, showing that a classic structure can be incorporated beautifully into modern higher density. “Built in 1928, Santa Fe was designed by renowned Vancouver-born Architects Townley & Matheson, the same team whose distinguished body of work includes recognizable heritage landmarks like Vancouver’s Art Deco City Hall.
Built by a former marine superintendent with the Canadian Pacific Rail, the building was originally named The Van Arsdel after his wife Eva Van Arsdel, and the family maintained a suite in the building when they were in town between trips back and forth to Asia. This stately building was unique considering the context of where it stood at the time. Back then, it was surrounded by dirt roads and a few single family homes. From Santa Fe’s address at 2975 Oak Street, at the corner of West 14th Avenue, the former city limits at West 16th Avenue were within two blocks. Only a year later this changed in 1929 when Vancouver amalgamated with the separate Municipality of Point Grey adding lands South of 16th Avenue, West of Cambie and included the elite Canadian Pacific Rail-developed Shaughnessy.
Santa Fe answered a need for multifamily housing in the City between the World Wars and was modelled with traditionalism – a response to North American post-war nostalgia and taste.
Santa Fe’s exterior featured poured concrete walls with applied shield and garland decorative plasters, Juliet balconies, deeply recessed windows, and a symmetrical façade that was evocative of the Period Revival movement popular in the 1920’s.
Today it stands with grace as a heritage icon in Fairview, retaining all of its original charm almost 90 years later.” - from the Santa Fe website.

Four variations of grey (I’m sure there are more shades...) Grey’s perceptions range from negative, bland, moody (“a grey day”) to peaceful, sophisticated, and timeless, to formal, neutral, conservative and practical. Depends on the interpretation. (‘Eigengrau’, a German word meaning "intrinsic gray", "own gray" “dark light”, or “brain gray”, is a name for the ‘background’ that many people report seeing in the absence of light.) As I was taking a photo of this charmer, a woman opened the front door and shouted at me “What are you *doing*?!?” I briefly explained (“I take pictures of pretty houses...”) She did not look convinced, or appeased, or mollified, or placated, or propitiated, or pacified, or soothed. She looked... skeptical. I would have thought, with a gorgeous house like this, she’d be accustomed to admirers. 💚

“In 1948, the French-language Saint-Sacrement Catholic Church was established on Heather Street just north of 16th Avenue. Almost 2,500 francophones - mostly French-Canadians - settled nearby, thus creating a francophone quarter by the early 1950s. A cultural centre, performance hall, credit union, newspaper, associations, café and grocery store all operated side-by-side along 16th Avenue. However, when the new Maison de la Francophonie opened in the late 1980s near Granville Street and 7th Avenue, all of the francophone associations moved to this new cultural hub. Saint-Sacrement church and school, still present and very active, remain the witnesses of that period when ‘joie de vivre’ reigned over the neighbourhood.”

“Constructed in 1912, this Craftsman-style house was originally built for a doctor who ran his practice from the coach house. During the 1930s and 1940s, the living room of this house was the scene of hundreds of marriage ceremonies when it was the home of Reverend Andrew Roddan, his wife and seven children.
One of the most prominent ministers in Vancouver in the 1930s, Rodden was the outspoken minister of the First United Church at Hastings Street and Gore Avenue. With his fiery Scottish accent, he broadcast a weekly radio program from his church, and became one of Vancouver’s first popular radio personalities. He has been described as ‘the heavyweight champ of the 1930s when it came to battling Sin, Poverty and Strong Drink in his ring’. The home had been converted to a lodging house in 1961, but was restored to its former glory in 1992.”

“It is that fundamental belief: I am my brother’s keeper, I am my sister’s keeper, that makes this country work. It’s what allows us to pursue our individual dreams and yet still come together as one American family. E pluribus unum. Out of many, one.” - Barack Obama, whose My Brother’s Keeper initiative promotes intervention by civic leaders in the lives of young men of color to address their unique challenges and to promote racial justice.
“The idea that we are our brother's keeper and our sister's keeper. That we should treat others as we would want to be treated. And that we care for the sick... feed the hungry... and welcome the stranger... no matter where they come from, or how they practice their faith.”

“Make no little plans,” architect Daniel Burnham instructed his team, aiming for maximum dazzle at the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago. George Washington Gale Ferris Jr. took it to heart, had big dreams, and spent $25,000 of his own money to design and build a giant revolving wheel. It measured 250 feet in diameter, and carried 36 cars, each capable of holding 60 people 😲. “More than 100,000 parts went into Ferris’ wheel, notably an 89,320-pound axle that had to be hoisted onto two towers 140 feet in the air. Launched on June 21, 1893, it was a glorious success. Over the next 19 weeks, more than 1.4 million people paid 50 cents for a 20-minute ride and access to an aerial panorama few had ever beheld. ‘It is an indescribable sensation,’ wrote a reporter named Robert Graves, ‘that of revolving through such a vast orbit in a bird cage.’”🎡

![The Eoff-Brady-Hof House originally had a ballroom in the basement, which in the 1940s was renovated into a bowling alley. Built for Alfred Eoff (listed as a bank cashier [!] but that must be old terminology because his character and demeanour are described in glowing terms, so it seems unlikely that he was carrying home big bags of cash), who married a nice Canadian girl named Victoria Marsh. It’s usually referred to as ‘the Governor’s House’, although Gov. James H. Brady only lived here 1909-1911. The present owner, Bill Hon, stirred up a ruckus last year when he allegedly threatened to demolish the home 😧causing the heritage-wise city council to pass a moratorium until the home could be included in a protected historic downtown district, which was created December 2018. It’s now charming, funky apartments.

A little girl named Mary Bell was accidentally shot by her brother’s friend here in the 1950s, and has haunted this beautiful house ever since. Like a mischievous child, she misplaces and hides things. Mary appears as a figure or a ray of light, and often played upstairs with the children of the current owner. As the children got older, she appeared less frequently, and since they have grown and gone, she hardly appears at all. The house is magnificent in its details, with frescoes, a large sunroof, servants’ amenities, a sink in each bedroom, and a fireplace with real gold laced through the tile in a beautiful design. Elaborate wooden interior doors dressed up with exquisite doorknobs are worth as much as surrounding homes. The house was made from local sandstone and is heated geothermally. Built by hotel and mine owner (the fireplace gold cane from his mines) businessman Timothy Regan, his family lived in the house for only one generation because sadly, his son was killed in WWI and they moved away. I particularly 💖the front door, 💖the triangular typanum with the oeil-de-boeuf (bull’s eye) window and 💖those column tops. And everything else.

A key stop on the Lewis and Clark route by train, the Idanha was the tallest building in Idaho (5 storeys - with the state’s only elevator) when it opened in 1901. Now, it’s haunted by a bell boy who was killed, taking guests riding the elevator to the fourth floor (where he was shot) regardless of which floor is selected. 👻 Now it’s apartments (mostly original), shops, and a bar. It’s a bit shabby compared to its glory days, but it has some marvellous stories to tell.
Idanha Hotel (1901) Architect: W.S. (Walter) Campbell. Built for $125,000.

The breathtaking London Guaranty & Accident Building has seen lots of action. Its London House, legendary jazz club/restaurant, was one of the coolest jazz spots in the U.S., hosting a beedoop skee doo bop who’s who: Oscar Peterson, Nancy Wilson, Ramsey Lewis, Dinah Washington, Bill Evans, Dave Brubeck, Marian McPartland, Cannonball Adderley, Bobby Short and on and on. Many live albums were recorded there. Frank Sinatra headlined the London House 20th anniversary bash in 1966 - his Chicago debut. The jazz club closed in the early 1970s, a victim of rock ‘n’ roll. From 1960-1980s, WLS AM radio studios broadcast from here. The London Guaranty Building has housed several businesses and is now London House hotel, as an homage to the jazz club. It’s on the site of Fort Dearborn, one of the four historic skyscrapers surrounding the DuSable (Michigan Ave.) Bridge, (along with the Wrigley, the Tribune, and 333 N. Michigan). p.s. I don’t know skeedly boop about jazz, but may I just say what a kick-ass name “Cannonball Adderley” is?! Just in case this is a goal of yours, get started here: www.wikihow.com/scat

It’s the place to be in Chicago: 3.1m sq. ft. of luxury retail, restaurants, major media companies, and hotels, lots of gorgeous landmarks, and eight of the world’s 😮 tallest buildings. After the Depression and WWII, real estate big shot Arthur Rubloff reinvented this length of Michigan Avenue as the Magnificent Mile, and it’s lived up to its promise. The Mile is anchored at one end by the original city site of Fort Dearborn (1803), the elegant Wrigley Building, the airy new Apple store and the amazing Tribune Tower where the DuSable Bridge crosses the Chicago River, and, at the North end, the legendary Drake Hotel overseen by the John Hancock Tower. But it’s not just concrete: each season holds something artistic and wonderful on Michigan Avenue. Hundreds of thousands of bulbs in bloom in the spring in special planters everywhere along the Mile.🌷 There’s art, events, free concerts, sculptures, a garden festival in the summer, and more than a million sparkling lights in December.🎄 #door #doors #chicagoil #magnificentmile #chicago #chicagogram #chicagotourism #tulips #spring #fortdearborn #wrigleybuilding #wrigleybuildingchicago #tribunetower #median #magnificentmilechicago #watertowerplace #hancocktower #applestoremichiganavenue #michiganavenue #architecture #architecturephotography #doorstory360

“All means all” - amazing how powerful just three words can be. “We extend a special welcome to those who are single, married, divorced, LGBTQ+, straight, filthy rich, or dirt poor. We extend a special welcome to crying newborns, those who are skinny as a rail or could afford to lose a few pounds. You’re welcome here if you’re ‘just browsing,’ just woke up or just got out of jail…” .

Gold was discovered in Idaho in 1860, and Boise’s first Methodist church was formed in 1872. This beautiful Cathedral opened (to all) just in time for Christmas 1960. The $9m addition in 2002 adds capacity (it now comprises a full city block) to this magnificent structure, for all the good work they do serving the surrounding community. I ❤️ the carved doors, the Gothic details, the soaring spire.

In January 1946, a troop train arrived to reunite the Westminster Regiment with loved ones at a huge homecoming celebration here at Queen’s Park. “The Westminsters marched into the oval under the moonlight as a faint mist rose from the chilled grass. They tramped to a patch of cold light cast by the floodlights before the platform as, from the dimness of the stands and from the masses that blanketed the corner of the field itself, there rose a roar from 5,000 throats that drowned the trumpets and even the skirl of the pipe band...they swarmed over the field and the khaki ranks were drowned by civvies suits. With laughter and tears of joy, wives, mothers and fathers and sweethearts were gathering to their arms the warriors who had returned.” (Yikes - you know it’s loud when you can’t hear bagpipes.) It was B.C.’s first public park and a barometer of the highs and lows of New Westminster. In 1919, the Prince of Wales opened the Provincial Exhibition, beginning a tradition of celebrations, exhibitions, May Days and public events held here to this day. It was occupied by soldiers during both World Wars. In 1929, the Right Honourable Winston Churchill, here to mark the occasion of the Provincial Exhibition‘s Diamond Jubilee, drew a crowd of 37,000, despite devastating fires at the waterfront paper mill and the park’s buildings just prior. In 1939, an indicator of the end of the Great Depression was a visit from the King and Queen, which swelled the city’s population from 22,000 to an enthusiastic 150,000.

Far more convenient than lugging rocks all the way to San Francisco, Boise’s Federal Assay Office is where miners in the area brought their gold to be separated out and assessed, or “assayed”.⚖️ So it’s understandable that a miner in a plaid shirt haunts the building to this day; it’s said you can hear his boots, too.⛏ One of only seven assay offices in the country, with sandstone rock-solid (ha) two feet thick and barred windows for security, this office received $75 million+ of precious metals in its history (1871-1933). The laboratory, vaults, furnaces, and offices were on the ground floor, the Chief Assayer and his family lived on the top floor, and the basement held staff and guards’ quarters and geothermal. When it opened, the area’s mining production was the third-highest in the U.S., but of course fortunes💰come and go. After closing, the building was Forest Service offices for several years; now it houses the State Historical Preservation Office and the Archaeological Survey of Idaho.
210 Main Street (1871) Possibly Provincial style. Alfred B. Mullett, architect. Land donated by Alexander Rossi (who was appointed Chief Assayer) Builder: John McBride (who became Superintendent)🤔 NRHP, 1961.

Sandstone two feet thick from rugged surrounding Idaho made the first Boise City National Bank building (1886) and then was moved piece by piece to construct the first floor of this version (1890) a few blocks away. In 1904, three more storeys were added. Apparently, just before the bank closed in 1932 (due to the Great Depression), crowds of people rushed to withdraw their savings and left disappointed and broke. In 1913, a renovation brought marble floors, columns and teller cages, which remain, adding charm to a restaurant. The bank vault is still in the basement; the door weighs 16 tons, which is equivalent to four adult hippopotami. 🦛🦛🦛🦛 805 West Idaho Street (1891-1906) Richardsonian Romanesque Revival style (named after famous architect Henry Hobson Richardson), which apparently incorporates a salad of various styles and involves upper windows with eyebrow arches. Architect James King modelled it after the Chicago Marshall Field store (1887). The bank board gave him a budget of $13,000; it cost $40,000.

Curves, cornices and circles - and roof finials, too. Mining magnate James L. Bush’s pretty Queen Anne-style mansion was built with St. Louis brick, zinc-plated sheet metal and Idaho sandstone. It’s survived pretty much intact, due to good construction, good luck and good people taking care of it. Today it houses a teacher’s apartment and various office spaces, including a spa/massage therapist.

Quirks and multiple details abound - including a secret passageway - in this one-of-a-kind heritage home, The dentil trim, six-over-six upper windows, and panelled wooden door with elaborate sidelights and Palladian windows are just the start. The house walls are “3 bricks thick” so water, gas and electrical are all visible inside and the basement is a labyrinth of pipes and wires. The main and second floor layouts are identical🤔. Most of the house’s details are original and imaginative (e.g. light fixtures). Doors and archways inside are all different sizes and designs, as though the architect was randomly trying things out, and some doors have fanciful windows: a star, flowers, and so on. There are remnants of bygone times, like servants’ quarters and a special kitchen door so that the grocery delivery boy could put away your order. The gardens are still beautifully kept, and the occupants, descendants of the original family, have made quite an effort to honour the home’s legacy. And yes, if you lean on an upstairs wall just right, a hidden passageway opens up.
Peter Sonna House, 121 Main Street (1902) - Federal style, which was considered patriotic at the time as it builds on the British Georgian style and leans toward Greek and Roman influences.

How to collect mail from tall buildings in a “zippy”* way? The first mail chute with a letter box at the bottom was in 1884, Rochester NY. In the beginning, mail chutes were only in railroad stations and public buildings. By 1905, the postal service allowed mail chutes to be placed in hotels with 5+ storeys and in apartments with 50+ units, and the patent had specifications too: over two storeys’ drop, the bottom of the box had to have an “elastic cushion” to "prevent injury to the mail." (No word on what an ‘elastic cushion’ looks like.) This lovely mail box is from the gorgeous Empire Building, named after its original tenant, Empire Hardware. (That’s the Idaho state flag on the right.) *pun alert

Architect Alfred Mullett seemed to spend his life burning bridges. The New York Sun called him "the most arrogant, pretentious, and preposterous little humbug in the United States”.❗️He had feuds with most everyone he worked with, and developed a reputation as a “micromanaging authoritarian” with an explosive temper. He was shadowed by accusations of extreme extravagance and five separate investigations of corruption. He designed ~40 government buildings over his career; eventually he was forced to resign. The original magistrate of Pioneer Courthouse, Portland’s beautiful de facto town center, was Judge Matthew Deady, with his flaming red hair. Judge Deady was ahead of his time in some ways, denouncing racist violence against Chinese Americans in the late 1800s. The Oregon Land Fraud Scandal trial (public officials illegally obtaining U.S. gov’t land grants) was held here in 1904. "Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds." But it’s not actually the motto of the post office; it’s a fella named Herodotus, talking about Persian couriers, in 500BC. Nowadays, the U.S. Post Office processes and delivers 187.8m pieces of mail per day😮. The fella I spoke with at this post office (didn’t ask if his name was Herodotus) was terrific - he found pretty stamps to stick on postcards to send to my grandkids.

The mayor’s wife, Helena, saw a picture of an ornate house and fell in love, so her husband Moses Alexander rounded up two carpenters to build one - and isn’t it marvellous. 💝 In 1891, Alexander, originally from Bavaria, left Chillicothe, Illinois (where he was mayor) on his way to Alaska. On his journey, he decided instead to stay in Boise and open his clothing store; he eventually became Idaho’s 11th governor. He led efforts to build Idaho’s first synagogue in 1895, the Ahavath Beth Israel (still in use), and was the country’s first practicing Jewish governor. The house is now used as office space, house museum, and a place for the current governor to entertain. I just 💕how much personality this house has, with its bay windows, turrets, scalloped siding, balconies, gingerbread and fancy windows.😍 304 West State Street - Moses Alexander house (1897). Frank Lloyd Wright was working as a draftsman for Louis Sullivan when they designed this house. Originally owned by lumberman James Charnley, it was acquired and restored by Seymour Persky in 1995. Its simple exterior belies a sumptuous interior, with elaborate mahogany woodwork throughout and an African rose marble fireplace in the library. ”This home, designed in 1891 by Louis Sullivan and Frank Lloyd Wright, is an important work in the development of modern residential architecture, and possesses national significance in commemorating the history of the United States of America.” (plaque)
Now a historic house museum and HQ of The Society of Architectural Historians, in whose presence I would utterly nerd out. 🤓

“No matter where you are from, we’re glad you’re our neighbor.” 💖 The sign shows their purpose of “sharing God’s gift of love with all”. Built by Scandinavian immigrants, Immanuel’s services were held in Swedish until 1918, when the congregation adjusted course - again, to be more inclusive - and switched to English. As with many buildings in the area, the beautiful base is built with local sandstone. Also: The current pastor and her husband named their dog Guido, which I think is “meraviglioso!” or possibly “wunderbar!”. 🐕

Part of the Oregon Trail, the historic Ninth Street Bridge started out with travellers on foot, horses and wagons, through Model Ts and sleek cars with fins; since 1960 it’s a pretty, pedestrian walkway through the forest. Its wooden planks link the Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial and the Boise River walkway (beside Boise State University). Right now the river is very high, fast and dangerous.

Thousands of excited people gathered here in 1925 to see the first transcontinental railroad train arrive. For 72 years, the Portland Rose 🌹 service (from Chicago to Portland, Oregon) passed through this pretty Boise station. Union Pacific ran it ‘til Amtrak took over the route in 1974. The local MK-Morrison Knudsen Foundation acquired and carefully restored the station👏🏼 in 1990. The City bought it in 1996, the last passenger trains stopped by in 1997, and since then it’s been a special event venue. 🎩 Also here, the impressive historical 2-8-2 Mikado (Big Mike, 267,850 lbs.) steam locomotive, which was built in 1920 and served valiantly through WWII until 1959. 🚂

Quite the high school, eh?! The auditorium seats 1,800; Bing Crosby and Duke Ellington played here. The architect’s design: a sparkling white institution of learning with a grand staircase flanked by classical columns, topped by a bust of Plato, surrounded (in Greek) with his Civic Virtues: Wisdom, Courage, Justice and Moderation. That’s a lot of grandeur to live up to. Also, the first Idaho radio station broadcast from the basement until 1923.

This charmer (scalloped gable! gingerbread fascia! rose arbour!) is a home (front and side) that’s been transformed - by a fairy godmother? - into a curio shop. With housing in such demand in many cities, the trend is to take shopping areas/malls and convert them into housing, so they’re either on the opposite flow of a trend, starting a new one, or the housing shortage is mainly in big, ridiculous cities. 🤔

“I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.” - Anne Frank ‘In 1995, a travelling exhibit on Anne frank drew tens of thousands of visitors from across Idaho. This overwhelming interest sparked the idea for a more permanent tribute... Though inspired by Anne Frank, the Memorial is not simply a static space to reflect upon her short life or even the horrors of the Holocaust. It was instead designed to actively engage us to think, to talk to one another and to respond to the human rights issues we face in our community, our country and our world.’
The Idaho Anne Frank Human Rights Memorial is an exhibit, an open-air classroom, and a beautiful, thought-provoking tribute. Abundant and relevant information including quotes from Maya Angelou, Malala Yousafzai, local human rights activist Bill Wasmuth, Albert Einstein and others, the UN Declaration of Human Rights, a human rights timeline along with a touching depiction of Anne peeking out a window. Today would have been Anne Frank’s 90th Birthday. Info from exhibit.

The largest building in the world when it opened (four million square feet!), the Merchandise Mart hosts 20,000+ people every day and had its own zip code (until the boundaries were re-drawn 😉). Lower left, you can see four of the eight bronze busts on tall pedestals: the Mart’s Hall of Fame (to locals, The Pez Dispensers), essentially Big Department Store Guys. There are fifty-six, 7’ tall terra cotta statues of Native American chiefs all around the tower’s crown, intended to be viewed from the upper floors of nearby skyscrapers. Built by retail giant Marshall Field, the Mart centralized and consolidated Chicago’s architectural and interior design wholesale goods business.

Looking south over a space containing a freeway and interchange, this side of 235 Van Buren represents vehicles viewed from above. It sits on the edge of Chicago’s busy Loop district. Shishi (architectural Chinese stone lions) come in pairs, to protect the building from spiritual or physical harm. Begijnhof, one of the Netherlands’ oldest hofjes (charity housing for religious women, built around a courtyard). Dating from the late 1300s, originally surrounded by water with a small bridge for access, it is at medieval street level: 1m below the rest of the city centre. It’s the site of two churches, the English Reformed Church (first photo) and the wall outside the hidden Catholic Houten Huys. Following my recent post on a Belgian beguinage, serendipity: another friend gave me these photos from her recent trip. 📷by Melissa Muir

Wrigley Field, home of baseball’s Chicago Cubs since 1916, is known for “its ivy-covered brick outfield wall, the unusual wind patterns off Lake Michigan, the iconic red marquee over the main entrance, the hand-turned scoreboard, its location in a primarily residential neighborhood with no parking lots, views from rooftops behind the outfield, and for being the last Major League park to have lights installed for play after dark, in 1988.” At Wrigley Field, if a baseball gets stuck in the ivy, the batter is awarded a ground rule double*. It’s the second-oldest ballpark in major league baseball after Fenway Park (Boston, 1912), and one of the most unpredictable 💨 to play. Other tenants have included football and soccer as well as baseball, and there’s been Whales🐳, Tigers🐅, Pros👓, Bears 🐻, Cardinals🏈, Feds 💼 and Sting🦂. Aided by the federal government, it was for an important reason: it became the new home of 210 nurses-in-training, to address the serious shortage of nurses caused by the war.

This is one of 30 small houses in a beguinage or hofje - housing for older, underprivileged, religious women - which have existed since the Middle Ages. The women did not take vows and were free to come and go. There were many advantages: community, protection, support. For security, the homes were usually in a U-shape and sometimes surrounded by a moat. Since 1927 this Bruges, Belgium beguinage has been a Benedictine convent. ✝️ 📷 courtesy Matthew Wu

It was built as and still commonly referred to as the John Hancock Center; last year someother company bought it and the naming rights.

The Panama-California Exposition was held in 1915-17 in San Diego to highlight the city as a port-of-preference after taking a sharp starboard out of the west exit of the new Panama Canal. Architect Bertram Goodhue’s Spanish Colonial style was featured at the Exposition and became a sunny-state classic in e.g. California and Florida.
That is a very odd placement for a light - right in the middle of the walkway. 🤔

Henry Tudor (Henry VII) kicked off the Renaissance with his pet project: building the port and dry dock facilities in Portsmouth 🌊(construction cost: £193, roughly £2 kajillion today). The infrastructure put England in a favourable position and is still a key sea hub. Tudor homes were popular from the mid-1800s to WWII, a distinctive, upscale look suited to colder climates.

Corbels (the little curly brackets under the roof extensions) have been used as supports in architecture since Neolithic times. "Corbel" comes from the Latin corbellus - corvus ("raven"), which refers to the beak-like appearance. The French call a corbel a corbeau ("crow"). Research: Wikipedia

“A highly-sophisticated mix of fashionable Arts and Crafts elements” says Heritage Burnaby - so much to enjoy. All those verandas! I ❤️ the “lunette” window too. It looks like the garage used to be where you can see bottom right, when cars were smaller. (1912) - J. R. & Frances Abigail Dawson home, who lived here until Frances’ death in 1938.
